Do I Need A Special Device To Use AI

From one senior to another

I know what you might be thinking: "Do I need to buy some fancy new computer or tablet just to try this AI thing?" The honest answer is no, you almost certainly already have everything you need — your current phone, tablet, or computer will work just fine.

AI tools are designed to be simple and accessible. For example, you can use AI to help you write a clearer letter to your doctor, summarize a confusing bill from the utility company, or even turn a scribbled grocery list into a neat, organized note that you can share with a family member. All from the device you're using right now.

What Devices Work With AI?

Most AI tools run in a web browser — that's the app you use to look up recipes or check the weather (like Chrome, Safari, or Edge). So if you can browse the internet, you can use AI. Your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer all work. No special hardware needed.

For example, my friend Betty used her old iPad to ask an AI to help her rewrite a thank-you note she'd been struggling with. She typed a few words, and the AI gave her a lovely draft she could personalize. She didn't need to buy anything new.

What About Privacy and Cost?

Many popular AI tools have free versions that are perfectly useful for everyday tasks. You don't need to enter any credit card info to start. As for privacy, treat AI like you would a helpful neighbor: don't share anything you wouldn't want repeated, like your Social Security number or bank passwords. But for everyday help — drafting emails, explaining a medical term, or planning a family dinner menu — it's safe and private.

For instance, I use a free AI tool to help me understand the fine print on my insurance statements. I just type in the confusing sentence, and it gives me a explanation. No cost, no special device, just peace of mind.

How to Get Started Safely

Start with a simple, well-known AI tool like ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot. Both are free and work on any device. Just go to their website, create a free account with an email address (you can use one you already have — no need to make a new one), and type in a simple request like "Help me write a birthday card for my granddaughter."

Take it slow. Try one small task a day. If you get stuck, ask a younger family member or a friend who's used it before. Most importantly, remember that you're in control — you can always stop, delete a conversation, or just close the browser. No pressure, no rush.
